Senate President Godswill Akpabio has congratulated Nigeria's female basketball team, D'Tigress, on their historic win in the 2025 FIBA Women's AfroBasket competition. However, according to multiple sources, D'Tigress actually won the competition for a record fifth consecutive time, not seventh. They defeated Mali 78-64 in the final, marking their seventh Afrobasket title overall.¹ ² ³
*Key Highlights of D'Tigress' Achievement:*
- *Fifth Consecutive Title*: D'Tigress became the first team in Africa to win the Women's Afrobasket title five times consecutively.
- *Unbeaten Run*: The team has remained unbeaten in the tournament for a decade, with their last loss dating back to October 2, 2015.
- *Qualification for World Cup*: This victory also granted Nigeria a spot in the 2026 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Berlin, Germany.⁴
Akpabio praised the team's industry and resilience, noting that Nigerian women are pacesetters and capable of undertaking any task. He also highlighted the recent wins of Nigeria's women's national football team, the Super Falcons, in the 10th WAFCON, saying it's heartwarming to see Nigeria capturing Africa twice in a short span.⁵
