On August 1, Atalanta rejected a €42 million offer, with an additional €3 million in bonuses, from Inter Milan for the 27-year-old player. Despite Lookman reportedly having reached an agreement on personal terms with Inter, Atalanta remains firm on their €60 million asking price.
In what appears to be a reaction to the stalled negotiations, Lookman unfollowed Atalanta on Instagram and eliminated the club's name from his bio. He has also deleted several posts, including those showcasing him in the team's jersey, and updated his profile picture, which no longer features Atalanta colors.
Additionally, Lookman was absent from Atalanta's lineup for their pre-season match against RB Leipzig in Germany on August 2. Reports suggest he is dealing with a calf injury that may keep him sidelined for several weeks.
Lookman joined Atalanta from RB Leipzig in 2022 for €10.8 million, quickly establishing himself as a crucial player with 52 goals in 118 appearances. His standout moment came in the 2023/24 Europa League final, where he netted a hat-trick, helping Atalanta secure their first European trophy.
He currently holds the title of CAF African Footballer of the Year, having succeeded fellow Nigerian Victor Osimhen, who won the award in 2023.
